Birthday Book Club

Happy June & July Birthdays!

Hey there, Book Readers! Birthday Books Club is here! We will celebrate those students with birthdays in June and July on September 6th. September 20th will be for students with birthdays in August and September. The tables will be set-up on the stage during the lunch hours. Students must eat lunch and clean-up first before choosing their book. Starting in October, this event will be held the first Wednesday of each month. This amazing program is sponsored by Winston's PTA.

Please note that all Kindergarten/ECDEC students will get their books from their classroom teachers.

Screenagers

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span?

Monday, September 18th
6:45pm at Sundling Jr. High

Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time-friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

TOWN HALL MEETING: PROPOSED SCHAUMBURG TIF DISTRICT

The public is invited to attend a town hall meeting Monday, Oct. 2 at Carl Sandburg Junior High School. Organized by OurD15Voice in partnership with District 15, the meeting will focus on the proposed Village of Schaumburg Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District at E. Algonquin and Meacham Roads on the former Motorola property. The event begins at 7 p.m. OurD15Voice is a board-appointed community engagement group.

The proposed development currently includes 2,700 townhouse and apartment units, most of which would be part of District 15. The district has concerns regarding a residential TIF of this size and its potential financial impact on the school district.
Tax increment financing is a public financing method used as a subsidy for redevelopment of blighted properties. A TIF district reallocates funds from property taxes to encourage investment within the district. TIFs significantly reduce allocations to taxing bodies like school districts for up to 23 years.

Representatives from District 15 will be present at the forum to discuss what is known about the proposed property and to discuss specifics regarding TIF districts in general. The public is invited to attend the meeting and ask questions related to the subject.

Additional town hall meetings regarding other topics of interest will take place throughout the school year. More information about those meetings will be announced as it becomes available.

Meet the PTA

Welcome from Mary Catherine Ritterbusch- PTA Co-President

Hello and welcome to the 2017-18 School Year. With a week and a half of school under our belt, we are off and running! The early bed time is gradually becoming more routine and many buses are now meeting and exceeding their pick up and drop off times!!

I'm Mary Catherine Ritterbusch, and my husband C.J. and I have a 5th Grade daughter, Marikate, and a son, Matthew who is a Sophomore at Palatine High School. We love WCE and all that Mr. Tieman and the staff have taught our kids. Our family became involved in the WCE PTA when our son was here, and I have been volunteering in various roles ever since. I have met so many wonderful families and staff at WCE, and I look forward to meeting and working with even more this school year.

I am happy to be able to help out the PTA this year to serve as Co-President along with Jenni Bennett and look forward to working with those of you who wish to lead the PTA in the future years. Please know that EVERYONE IS NEEDED and WANTED!!! If there is a particular event or project you would like to start or discuss the possibility of starting at WCE, please don't hesitate to contact Jenni or myself. Also, be sure to check out the electronic PTA Calendar in the left margin of this newsletter and click on an event to enable the option 'Copy to my Calendar'.

Pool Party Update

We made a BIG SPLASH!

The Back to School Pool party was a HUGE hit with over 150 in attendance! The kids of WCE were very excited to see the great teacher turnout this year... A big thanks to Ms. Abdnor, Ms. O'Connor, Ms. McArtor, Ms. Delapa, Mrs Smith & Mrs Orseno for spending the evening with us! Once again, one of the highlights of the evening has become the Teacher High Dives!

PTA stands for Parent-Teacher-Association and the teacher involvement at our events reflects the great community that we have a Winston! Also, a huge thanks to Mrs Swierczek, Mrs Olson & Mrs Escudero for helping run the concessions table. I can't wait until next year to do it all over again!

PTA 2017-18 Needs

Committee Chair Needs

As we look forward to next year, we are needing to fill the following PTA Chairperson roles. The only way they will be offered is if we have someone (or two someones sharing the load) to run them.
Bilingual Liaison: assist with translating and finding ways to encourage bilingual families to participate in PTA and our events
Everybody Counts: coordinate with teachers/volunteers to provide this program that opens eyes to different abilities and encourages empathy for those with them

If you are interested in one of these, please be sure to notify us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Message from the PTA Co-Presidents

Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!

We hope everyone had an enjoyable summer break.  The long days and late nights sure make for fun times and truly define SUMMER BREAK.  However, there is something exciting and promising about school starting and having an earlier bedtime back in place!!

The PTA Officers and Committee Chairs have been meeting and communicating (i.e. lots of emails) all summer long to prepare for the coming school year.  We hope you've had a chance to review the 'BLUE PAPER' packet included in the school mailing as it contained the following forms of which several can be permanently found on the left column of the Weekly Window email:

Be sure to drop off your completed forms and Membership dues at the PTA table during Tuesday's Meet the Teacher event from 1:30pm-2:30pm.  The table will be located just outside the main office and entrance area.  Stop by and say 'Hello'  OR return them with your child to school to be forwarded to the PTA.

We are excited to introduce an electronic calendar (Google) this year and hope it allows everyone to quickly and efficiently link our PTA and School events to your personal calendars.  See the link to the left under "Looking Ahead."

Please don't hesitate to send us your feedback or just simply ask us 'WHY ....'.  We want to hear your thoughts and ideas on how to make WCE PTA better and better each day!! In an effort to make this easier, we have added a WCE Parent Survey to the left under "Parent Resources."  Please take a few moments to share your insights and know that your voice will be heard.

Stay tuned each week for a Weekly Window PTA update and watch for our Introductions beginning next week.
